Speed tests are easy to misread. A slow result might mean your ISP is throttling — or that your microwave is killing your Wi-Fi. Here's how to test properly.

What the Numbers Mean

  • Download — how fast you receive data (streaming, browsing)
  • Upload — how fast you send data (video calls, uploads)
  • Ping/latency — round-trip time in ms (lower is better)
  • Jitter — variation in ping (matters for calls and gaming)

How to Test Accurately

  1. Use Ethernet, not Wi-Fi, when possible
  2. Close streaming, downloads and cloud sync first
  3. Test 3 times at different times of day
  4. Compare against your ISP's advertised speed

Common Speed Killers

  • Old router (3+ years)
  • Wi-Fi interference from other networks
  • Too many devices on the same network
  • VPN or background updates

When to Call Your ISP

If you consistently get less than 50% of your advertised speed on Ethernet at off-peak hours, your ISP owes you an explanation.
