Your IP address is the digital ID your device uses to communicate on the internet. Without it, no website or service could send data back to you. In this guide we'll break down exactly what an IP is, how to find yours, and what it reveals about you.

What an IP Address Actually Is

Think of an IP address like a postal address for your device. When you load a website, your device sends a request and the server uses your IP to send the page back. Every device connected to the internet — phones, laptops, smart TVs — has one.

There are two main versions in use today: IPv4 (e.g. 192.168.1.10) and IPv6 (a longer hexadecimal format). Both do the same job, but IPv6 was created to handle the explosion of connected devices.

Public vs Private IP

Your home Wi-Fi router has one public IP that the outside world sees. Inside your network, each device gets a private IP (often starting with 192.168 or 10.0). Private IPs are only visible on your local network.

  • Public IP: assigned by your ISP, visible to websites you visit.
  • Private IP: assigned by your router, used inside your home or office.

What Your IP Reveals

Your public IP can reveal your approximate city, your internet service provider, and your timezone. It does not directly reveal your name, exact street address, or browsing history — but combined with cookies and tracking it can build a profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my IP change?

Most home IPs are dynamic and change every few days or when you restart your router. Business connections often have static IPs.

Can two devices share an IP?

Yes — devices behind the same router share one public IP via NAT, but each has a unique private IP.
