Quick answer

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Tool Is Actually the Most Private?

None of the three big AI chatbots defaults to "no training" on a normal consumer account. Claude has the strongest privacy posture once you decline training, because Anthropic then keeps consumer chats for only about 30 days, while OpenAI keeps undeleted chats until you delete them and Google can retain human-reviewed Gemini conversations for up to three years.

Short answer: on out-of-the-box defaults, none of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is a private place to type. All three use consumer conversations to improve their models unless you go and change a setting. Where they genuinely differ is what happens once you say no — and on that measure Claude currently comes out ahead, because Anthropic keeps chats from consumers who decline training for roughly 30 days, while OpenAI keeps undeleted chats indefinitely and Google can hold human-reviewed Gemini conversations for up to three years.

Everything below is drawn from each company's own published policy and help documentation. These documents change frequently — Anthropic alone updated its consumer privacy policy in August 2025 and again in mid-2026 — so treat this as a snapshot and check your own settings screen before relying on it.

How Each Tool Handles Your Data by Default

Here is the comparison across the three things that actually matter: whether your chats train the model, how long data sticks around, and whether you can turn it off.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

  • Trains on consumer chats by default: yes. OpenAI's Data Controls FAQ states that for accounts that have not turned it off, content is used to help train and improve models. This covers Free, Plus and Pro.
  • Opt-out available: yes — a settings toggle, plus Temporary Chat for one-off conversations.
  • Retention: normal chats are saved to your account until you delete them. Deleted chats are removed from your account immediately and purged from OpenAI systems within roughly 30 days. Temporary chats are not used for training and are removed within about 30 days.
  • Legal hold status: a May 2025 court order in the New York Times litigation temporarily forced OpenAI to preserve consumer and API output logs. OpenAI stated in October 2025 that this obligation ended on September 26, 2025, so standard deletion practices apply again.

Claude (Anthropic)

  • Trains on consumer chats by default: effectively yes, but as an explicit choice. Anthropic's August 28, 2025 consumer terms update began asking every Free, Pro and Max user whether their chats and coding sessions may be used to train future models.
  • Opt-out available: yes, in the privacy settings, and it is presented up front rather than buried.
  • Retention: allow training and chat data can be kept for up to five years. Decline and the standard consumer retention window of about 30 days applies. That 30-day figure is the tightest guaranteed number of the three.
  • Commercial products: Anthropic's documentation states it does not train on data from commercial products such as the Claude API and Claude Enterprise by default, with zero-data-retention options available on the API.

Gemini (Google)

  • Trains on consumer chats by default: yes, whenever Gemini Apps Activity (formerly "Keep Activity") is on — the default state for most signed-in users.
  • Opt-out available: yes — turn Gemini Apps Activity off, or use Temporary Chat, introduced in August 2025.
  • Retention: Google states that conversations selected for human review are separated from your account and retained for up to three years. With activity off, most non-reviewed prompts are deleted within about 72 hours.
  • Enterprise: Google Workspace's privacy hub and Vertex AI documentation both state that customer content is not used to train generative models without permission, with zero-data-retention configurations available on Cloud.

Read those three lists together and a pattern appears. Google clears unsaved data the fastest but has the longest ceiling for reviewed samples. OpenAI's toggle stops training but does not shorten storage. Anthropic is the only one that ties the choice to a materially shorter retention period.

Free Tier vs Paid Tier Privacy Differences

The most important line in this comparison is not between the three brands — it is between consumer accounts and business accounts.

On the consumer side (ChatGPT Free/Plus/Pro, Claude Free/Pro/Max, Gemini in a personal Google account), training is on unless you turn it off, and your chat history is a stored asset by default. Paying for a personal subscription does not change this: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are consumer tiers, and both are covered by the consumer training policies above. Paying for speed and model access is not the same as paying for privacy.

On the business side, the commitments flip. OpenAI states that ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and the API platform keep customer content confidential and do not use it to train models by default. Anthropic says the same for Claude Team, Enterprise and the API, and offers zero data retention. Google's Workspace privacy hub and Vertex AI documentation both commit to not training on customer content without permission. If you handle client data, source code, or anything regulated, that tier difference is the whole ballgame.

What You Should Never Type Into Any AI Tool

Settings help, but they do not change the basic risk: you are sending text to someone else's computer, where it may be stored, sampled, and read by a human reviewer. Some things should simply never be pasted, regardless of provider or plan. We covered this in depth in is it safe to paste your code or data into ChatGPT — the short version:

  • Credentials of any kind: passwords, API keys, tokens, private keys, database connection strings. Assume a pasted secret is a burned secret.
  • Customer or patient records, or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement or health privacy law.
  • Full identity documents: government ID numbers, passport scans, full card numbers.
  • Unreleased legal, financial or acquisition material.
  • Proprietary source code you are contractually barred from disclosing — the 2023 Samsung incident started exactly this way.
  • Someone else's sensitive personal data. Their consent is not yours to give.

The workable habit is redaction: replace names, keys and identifiers with placeholders before you paste. The model almost never needs the real values to help you.

How to Turn Off Chat History and Training Use

Menu names shift as these products get redesigned, so treat these as the current paths rather than permanent ones. In each case, opting out affects future use — it does not pull your text back out of a training run that has already happened.

ChatGPT

  1. Open Settings from your profile menu.
  2. Go to Data Controls.
  3. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone".
  4. For sensitive one-offs, start a Temporary Chat instead — it is excluded from training and removed within about 30 days.

Claude

  1. Open Settings, then Privacy.
  2. Decline the option that allows your chats and coding sessions to help improve Claude.
  3. Declining keeps you on the shorter consumer retention window of roughly 30 days rather than the five-year window that applies when training is allowed.

Gemini

  1. Open your Gemini Apps Activity settings (from the app menu, or via your Google Account activity controls).
  2. Turn Gemini Apps Activity off. Most non-reviewed data is then deleted within about 72 hours.
  3. Delete existing activity while you are there — turning the setting off does not clear what is already stored.
  4. Use Temporary Chat for anything you do not want saved to your activity.

One caveat worth repeating: on every platform, a conversation already selected for human review can persist under that review process even after you delete it or switch training off.

So Which One Should You Use?

If you want the shortest guaranteed retention on a consumer plan, Claude with training declined is currently the strongest option on the evidence. If you are already inside Google's or OpenAI's ecosystem, both can be brought to a reasonable place with two minutes in settings. And if the data belongs to clients or your employer, none of the consumer tiers is the right answer — use a business or API tier that carries a no-training commitment.

For everything else, the discipline matters more than the brand: redact before you paste, keep secrets out of chat windows, and re-check your privacy settings after each big product update. Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI chatbot is the most private?+

On defaults, none of them is private — all three use consumer conversations to improve models unless you opt out. Once you do opt out, Claude is the strongest of the three because Anthropic's non-training consumer retention is about 30 days, which is shorter than OpenAI's indefinite storage of undeleted chats and shorter than Google's up-to-3-year retention of human-reviewed samples.

Is ChatGPT safe to use?+

It is safe for ordinary work if you assume anything you type could be stored and reviewed. OpenAI's Data Controls FAQ confirms that content from Free, Plus and Pro accounts is used to help train and improve models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone". Business, Enterprise, Edu and API usage is not used for training by default.

Is Claude private by default?+

Not fully. Since Anthropic's August 28, 2025 consumer terms update, Free, Pro and Max users are asked to choose whether their chats can be used for training. If you allow it, chat data can be retained for up to five years. If you decline, the standard consumer retention of about 30 days applies. Claude Team, Enterprise and the API are not trained on by default.

Does Google Gemini use my conversations for training?+

Yes, when Gemini Apps Activity (previously "Keep Activity") is on, which is the default for most signed-in users. Google states a small sample of conversations may be reviewed by humans and retained for up to three years. With activity turned off, most non-reviewed data is deleted within about 72 hours, and Temporary Chats are not saved to your activity.

How do I stop an AI chatbot from training on my data?+

In ChatGPT: Settings, then Data Controls, then turn off "Improve the model for everyone", or use Temporary Chat. In Claude: open Settings, Privacy, and decline the option to help improve Claude. In Gemini: open Activity settings and turn off Gemini Apps Activity, or use Temporary Chat. Turning these off does not retroactively remove data already used in a completed training run.
